Following the successful conclusion of the National Migration Conversation in Abuja on July 9th, 2026, Migrationwatch Magazine has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening public understanding of migration in Nigeria. The event was hosted by Migrationwatch Magazine as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility
The National Migration Conversation brought together government agencies including NIDCOM, NAPTIP, IOM Nigeria, academia, civil society, and media to discuss safe, regular, and dignified migration, remittances, and the protection of migrant rights.
Speaking to newsmen at the sideline of the event, Onoja Saint Michael, Executive Editor of Migrationwatch Magazine, stated that the media has a critical role to play in shaping the migration narrative.
“Our self-imposed mandate is to complement stakeholders’ efforts and to intensively enlighten the public”, Onoja said.
“Migration affects families, communities, and the economy. From the $20 billion in remittances noted by NIDCOM to the brain gain potential highlighted by academia, Nigerians deserve accurate, consistent, and accessible information to make informed choices.”
Earlier in a welcome address, the executive editor expressed profound appreciation to agencies of government, the members of the academia, the International Organisation for Migration, CSOs and migration experts that attended the conversation.
The Editor also expressed gratitude to the Deputy Chief of Mission and the chief of communication at IOM for the motivation and encouragement so far towards the actualization of the mandates
Onoja noted that Migrationwatch Magazine is poised to spearheaded the quest to change migration narrative and to amplify outcomes of the National Migration Conversation through sustained media engagement, data-driven reporting, and its upcoming weekly radio program, Migrationwatch Live.
“We can not leave migration communication to press releases alone. People need stories, data, and experts on radio, online, and in their communities. That is the gap we intend to fill”, he added.
The magazine called on government, development partners, and the private sector to collaborate in ensuring Nigerians at home and abroad have access to credible information on safe migration pathways, rights, and opportunities.
