The Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, on Monday, 13th April, at Abuja Continental Hotels declared open a high-level training programme on AI-powered revenue generation, remittance, and reconciliation to plug leakages and improve transparency.

The event attracted management staff of the Service, relevant members of the National Assembly, the media, and other key stakeholders.

In a keynote address, CGC Adeniyi acknowledged increasing relevance of AI but emphasized the role of personnel in maximizing the operational benefits of Artificial Intelligence.

He explained that AI systems may flag discrepancies in customs processes but such detection requires the capabilities and readiness of Customs’ personnel to act appropriately for effectiveness.

“AI may signal irregularities, but officers must respond decisively. Technology alone cannot deliver perfection; it is our duty to ensure compliance and integrity in the system,” he said.

Deputy Comptroller-General in charge of Finance, Administration & Technical Services, Kikelomo Adeola, in her welcome address, urged participants to engage actively, ask relevant questions and share experiences.

She explained that the training was designed to equip Customs officers and stakeholders with knowledge and strategic insights in the management of public funds.

“The collaboration among stakeholders, including the legislature and fiscal oversight bodies, reflects a shared commitment to ensuring that every naira due to the Federation Account is properly accounted for,” Kikelomo stressed.

In their separate remarks, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Accounts, Aliyu Wadada and the Chairman of House Committee on Public Accounts, Bamidele Salam both commended the leadership of the CGC for consistently improving revenue generation as well as reducing reconciliation errors to the bearest minimum.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Assistant Comptroller-General I. Aba Aji of Customs Finance and Administration . Aba Aji appreciatiated participants and stakeholders for their commitment.

He expressed deep hope that the training, coming at the right time, would translate into improved service delivery and enhanced national revenue performance.
